Nationalizing our Police - is that the next goal of the Left? Support Your Local Police

Attacks on law enforcement by radical left organizations continue almost daily. They are fed by the liberal press and the official organs of the Communist Party. For a century, Marxists and their front groups have focused on demonizing local police with demonstrations, riots, and false accusations. They then count on leftists in the media to have their poison appear on television and radio, and in liberal newspa- pers. Their goal is to convince Americans that local police are a serious problem and the solution is a national police force.

Every tyranny on earth logically relies on a national police organization to assure control over the citizens it enslaves. One only need recall Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the past, and Cuba and China in the present, to understand the terror inflicted by criminal regimes through their national police.

In June of 1961, the U.S. Senate Internal Security Subcommittee released a small report that detailed Communist plans to discredit and destroy local police forces. Called “A Communist Plot Against the Free World Police,” it was ignored by much of the mass media. Here, in part, is what it said:

Our police are among the foremost guardians of freedom and thus a major target of the Communists. The better the force ... the more vital it is for the Communists to destroy it....

The Communist technique [of war against police] has been directed

primarily toward discrediting the police in the eyes of the people....

There is a natural antipathy between the police and Communists. The police learn early in their careers that the Communist Party is not just another political movement but is an international conspiracy....

A campaign against the police of one free country is not planned and directed by the Communist Party of that country; it is planned and directed by the strategists of international communism.

Over 50 years ago, this Senate panel had it right. Images of recent demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland, showed an unruly mob carrying signs with the Revolutionary Communist Party’s website address prominently displayed. The people in these communities know that communism is not dead and has not gone away.

The John Birch Society is in the process of rejuvenating the Support Your Local Police pro- gram. We will start with a special issue of The New American (cover date September 21) on the subject. In addition, there will be a number of videos, a pam- phlet, an updated booklet, and a manual for starting a Support Your Local Police committee (this man- ual will only be available from your Coordinator). Members should contact their Coordinator for information on starting a committee.

When members of The John Birch Society helped defeat the existing Civilian Police Review Board in New York City in 1967, they were assisted by New York City police officers and many non-Birch New Yorkers who clearly saw the danger of a review board staffed by hard-core leftists. One of the tools used in that fight was a 6 x 6 inch Support Your Local Police window cling. Members sold these to local businessmen/women who displayed them in the windows of their businesses. The money raised from the sale of this single item was enough to staff separate SYLP committees in all five New York City boroughs. Just having those signs in store windows helped greatly to defeat the Civilian Police Review Board in the subsequent referendum.

These 6 x 6 window clings are now available from ShopJBS.org, and each Coordinator has a sup- ply. For those who wish to start a committee, this might help raise resources and enable committee members to purchase other materials in support of the local police.

Action Summary

• Start a Support Your Local Police Committee; ask your Coordinator for help and advice.

“Standing Against Defeat,” the cover story by Fr. James Thornton in the August 24 issue of The New American puts our own perilous times in proper perspective by recalling the much more desperate times of the early Christians, who lived in a despotic and pagan empire that worshiped the emperors as deities, and who were subjected to terrible persecutions. Surely, it must have seemed at the time, the empire would obliterate Christianity. Yet the opposite happened: It was Christianity that subsumed the Roman Empire!

the very militarization it now claims it must rein in, and that nationalizing police would result in a much greater abuse of rights than now actually occurs. Nor is it mentioned that the riots that have ramped up vio- lence against people (including police) and property, as well as the police response to quell the violence, are being fostered to create the impetus from below for nationalization.

Exposing this insidious scheme, and supporting local police who protect and serve their fellow citi- zens, is the purpose of the special September 21 issue of The New American we are now working on. We will have more to say about this special issue in the October Bulletin, particularly its use as a tool.
